Welcome to the Chicago Circle

Refugees International’s goal is to expand its effectiveness by strengthening its advocacy and widening its geographical impact. Chicago, with its large civic-minded and dynamic community, can help to advance RI’s important work on behalf of 55 million displaced and stateless people worldwide. For this very purpose, RI launched a Chicago Circle in September 2011, which brings together a citywide group of committed, bi-partisan and informed leaders. These individuals will contribute their talents and support to help strengthen RI’s lifesaving advocacy, by focusing on regional outreach, public awareness and expanding RI’s donor base. Please consider viewing Refugees International: Celebrating 30 Years”, a short video which provides a summary of RI’s history dating from the founding of the organization in 1979 to address refugee crises in Indochina.

I am interested in the following countries and/or issues in which RI works:

Afghanistan
Burma
Colombia
DRC
Iraq
Libya
Pakistan
Somalia
Sudan
Climate Displacement
Humanitarian Response
Internal Displacement
Peacekeeping
Statelessness
Women and Children

Your support is especially meaningful to RI because our organization does not accept government or UN funding, allowing our advocacy to be fiercely independent.

Each year, RI conducts 20 to 25 field missions to witness and identify displaced people’s needs for basic services, such as, food, water, health care, housing, access to education and security. Our expert recommendations are highly valued by the very people whose decisions bring relief and lifesaving solutions to displaced people. In Fall of 2011, we will have five RI missions underway to Kuwait, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Burma.

Missions last two to three weeks and cost between $20,000 and $30,000. Financial support is a wonderful way to become more involved in RI’s work. Donors will be invited to participate in telephone briefings by advocates upon their return from the field. They will also be the first to receive briefing reports and in-person updates on all missions from President Michel Gabaudan on his visits to Chicago.

If you have any questions regarding donations, particularly those which you would like to designate for a particular field mission, please do not hesitate to contact Acting Director of Development Courtney Stamm at 202-828-0110 x 204.
